Planner's Guide

Everything you need to know about fly fishing the Catskills

Why hire a guide?

The Catskills have hundreds of miles of trout water — and most of the best runs are invisible to anyone who hasn't fished them for years. A local guide eliminates the learning curve and puts you on fish the first day. Beyond access, a guide teaches you to read the water in a way that improves every subsequent trip you take, anywhere.

What to bring

  • 5-weight or 6-weight fly rod — most Catskills guides can provide gear if needed
  • Wading boots with felt or rubber soles (check current regulations)
  • New York State fishing license — available online at dec.ny.gov
  • Polarized sunglasses — essential for reading water and spotting fish
  • Layers — mornings on the river are cold even in summer
  • Your guide will supply flies, leaders, and tippet

Where to stay

Roscoe, NY (known as "Trout Town USA") is the central hub for Catskills fishing. The Beaverkill Valley Inn is the classic choice. Livingston Manor has several quality options. Most guides can make specific lodging recommendations based on which river you're fishing.

Getting there from NYC

The Catskills are approximately 2–2.5 hours from Manhattan via I-87 north and Route 17. Most guides meet clients at a designated access point — your guide will send directions after booking is confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience to book a guide?
No. Many of the best guide trips happen with complete beginners. Just tell your guide your experience level when booking — they'll tailor the day accordingly. Several Catskills guides on Riffle specialize specifically in beginners.
What's included in a guided trip?
Most Catskills guides include flies, leaders, tippet, and instruction. Some include waders and boots — check individual guide profiles. You'll need your own New York State fishing license. Lunch is sometimes included on full-day trips.
What's the cancellation policy?
Most guides on Riffle offer free cancellation up to 14 days before your trip. Check the individual guide profile for their specific policy. Riffle holds a 25% deposit at booking — the remainder is paid directly on the day of your trip.
When is the best time to fish the Catskills?
May and June are prime for dry fly fishing — the Green Drake and Sulphur hatches draw fish to the surface reliably. September and October are exceptional for larger fish on streamers and Blue-Winged Olives. April and early May see the famous Hendrickson hatch. The Delaware runs well year-round as a tailwater fishery.
How much should I tip my guide?
Tipping is customary and appreciated. Standard is $50–$100 for a half day and $80–$150 for a full day, depending on the quality of the experience. Tip in cash at the end of the trip.
